    Exhaust cover use?

While working out what I thought was engine noise, I found the actual culprit was a rattling exhaust cover (metal cover over exhaust pipe located bottom and slightly rear of engine). I was going to then tighten and replace the bolts holding it on, but I found they had broken off.

So at this point I removed both covers and it actually looks better. However, I assume that these shiny covers are not just there for decoration. Do these act as heat shields for the engine or protection for the rider? What is the harm is leaving them off?

Yes, they are heat shields. I recommend removing the broken bolt remains and reattaching them.

I think they're mostly decorative. Hides the weld underneath. Mine were missing when I bought the bike but i found a set on eBay and just bought the hardware to reinstall them.

If these shields mostly keep the engine from getting hot then I will reinstall. However, if they are simply for rider protection or aesthetics then I will leave them off.

Then leave them off. They have nothing to do with keeping the engine cooler.
