gs550 tuning

my gs550 is running better now, but there is alot of loud snapping when i rev it up and when i am riding it does it and it rides a little rough because of it. i have the original air box and pipes, i am about to spend the money for it to go into the shop. fuel screws are at 1 turn and the air screws are about the same. would like to fix this with out spending money. i sprayed stuff around the head gasket and intake boots and nothing is leaking. so i would love help so i can fix it before it is gone for weeks

o and i just thought of something, would not having any rubber hoses on the vent nipples for the carb affect anything.

Please provide details on what maintenance you have done to the bike.

Full carb rebuild w/fresh O-rings inside and on the intake boots?

Valve adjustment?

Clean air filter and airbox sealed all around?

Condition of points and condenser?

One thing: the air screws should be open about 1.5 turns and the fuel screws about 7/8ths if the intake and exhaust is stock and properly sealed.

Many bikes with pod filters do not use hoses on the carb vents. Just make sure they are pointed down.

its all been rebuilt the points are a year old, andit has new intake boots and orings, i rebuilt the top end and i believe the air box and pipes are sealed up. how would i test the pipes to see if they are sealed right, i put new exhaust gaskets on when i put the exhaust back on

Hi,

What year is your bike? I'm assuming a '78 or '79 since you seem to be describing VM carbs. If so, have you tried setting them according to Mr. Nessim's instructions? Have they been properly cleaned? Has a shop been working on your bike?

Exhaust leaks in the header can sometimes sound like "snapping" or "clicking". Can you tell if any noises are coming from that area? Underneath, where the header joins the mufflers, you almost have to wave a cigarette (or maybe incense) underneath to detect puffs of exhaust leaks. Or perhaps use a spray bottle with water, or atomizer, that puts out a fine mist and look for disturbances.

i will have to check, but i wouldnt think it would leak with new gaskets in it

alot of the time when its making the noise, it kinda looks like its coming out of the carbs

When was the last time the valves were adjusted? Is the timing set properly?

i have the cam timing set as the manual says at 20 roller links. i went by the manual for the points timing and i believe i have that set right, i will be checking valve clearence tomorrow, but the bike ran with the same shims last year and it ran good, so i didnt think anything would of changed with them

Reset your pilot screws.
