    1978 GS 1000 Carb issues ....

Greetings and solutations to all the fellow GS owners out here this evening be they be past or present .... If you had one ... you all know what they're about .....
A friend of mine recently picked up a Wes Cooley Replica REPLICA ... 78 vintage.
He's having a hell of a time trying to get the carbs dialed in .... I haven't really spent much time out there with him but .... He's got KnN pod style air filters and an old Jardine pipe on it ..... She pops a lot off idle and when cruising .... He pulled everything apart and did a basic clean up but nothing changed other than it did run a little better when we realized that the boots were not sealing properly ... Any suggestions or direction would be most welcome ....
Also considering moving away from the stock 26's and into something like a 34 from an early GSXR .... Any thoughts on that ? ... What boots would he have to use ... ?
    Thanks,
    The Doberdewd ...

Manifold and carb O-rings from www.cycleorings.com
As for the carbs, with the small port early heads, I would recommend using the 32CV carbs and the pods measure 54mm.

Here is my '78 with that very set up...

Better yet, and much easier to tune, get a set of 29 mm smooth-bore Mikuni's to run on it.
Like I have on one of my '79 engines...

There appear to be to sets of screws to adjust on the outside .... one set on the bottom and another on the sides of the carbs .... It's been a while since I have played with these carbs .... Like about 25 years so I don't remember which one does what .... Gimme a set of RS FlatSlides any day ...
I just took it for a scoot around the block .... won't get out of it's own way right now ..... just bogs out when you hit the throttle ... spittin and a sputterin ...
To me it seems way lean .... I suggested he go up a few sizes on the mains and pilots ..... What are your thoughts on that approach ? Or if you have a combination that you have already tried out and succeeded with , I'm all ears ...

Side screw is for air, and the bottom screw is for fuel. Fuel screw is normally somewhere around .75-1 turn out from lightly seated. Air screw is normally out about double what the fuel screw ends up on.

That's idle fuel screw and idle air screw

The main jets should be about 122.5, the pilots can stay at 15

A complete carb clean and new O rings would make them easier to tune, plus new intake boots and O rings there

On my '78 I'm running a V&H 4-1 exhaust and Uni pods with a Dynajet stage three kit with the 142 jets and it runs like a dream. I also dipped the carbs, sprayed them out with cleaner, and replaced the o-rings.
