    Shock removal. Do I need to drop the exhaust

    I'm wanting to swap out my junk shock's. I just surveyed the situation a little. It appears that I need to drop the exhaust.

    The big problem with that is my cross over pipe looks like it is welded together. Hell, all but one joint is welded together. And that one leaks. To make matters worse, I have a broken bolt on #3 exhaust flange. But no exhaust leak there.

    Can you guy's see a big can of worm's here. I've been putting it off for a year. I'm scared to death to even look at that broken bolt. Is there any tip's you guy's can give where I don't have to drop the exhaust. Thanks.

    you don't have to drop it, you can just set it down gently. LOL

          Put the bike on the centerstand.
          Remove the top shock retainer nuts.
          Pull the tops of the shocks off the mounts.
          Lower the wheel to the ground.
          Remove the lower nuts by reaching under the exhaust.

            Man am I red in the face.

            I just went out to take some pic's to show those shock's weren't coming off with out moving the exhaust out of the way.

            Well I got a more serious look at it and seen that all I had to do was take the top off first. Then I came back in and read that's exactly what you guy's posted. I knew you guy's would steer me right.

            Just think. I've put this off for a year. Thanks for the replies.

              Just a little update for future reference.

              I didn't have quite enough clearance to get the nut/bolt off with the tire sitting on the ground. So I just raised the wheel and put a jack under the tire.

              Done deal. Thanks again.

                I had to do the same thing recently when I pulled my rear wheel to get a new tire mounted. I also thought I would have to remove the exhaust. Anxiety was setting in as I stared at all of the rust on the pipes until it clicked in my brain "if you can't lower the wheel enough, try to raise it". Had it off in no time after that.
