Can I use a set of 79 GS750 mechanical carbs on a 81 GS850
I have a set of 79 GS750 mechanical carbs from a bike I sold. Can I use these carbs on a 81 GS850G? Did the older GS850's come with mechanical carbs? If I can use them where do you get the rebuild kits, ebay? Is there anything I need to change in them to make them work? Can I use them on a 80 GS1000 shafty?Tags: None

Sure. Easy.
Change the cylinder head and the intake manifolds to '79 75/850 parts.
They will bolt right on.

Actually, he is quite right.
The '79 850 came with the same VM carbs you are asking about.
Starting with the '80 model, they came with BS-series carbs, which are much larger.
The ports in the cylinder head are larger to match, so the later heads are actually better for performance.

Exactly!
Keep your good head on it and find another set of carbs if there is something catastrophically wrong with your current 32's replace them with 34CV's and make that bike happy!
I did it to mine back in 1980.

If you had to it is possible ! You would need to modify a set of carb boots ? Or find a hose that will fit the mech carbs and fit inside the CV carb boots to cut a 1/2" slice from. From a performance aspect it is a step backwards

Head
Would it be possible to port a 1979 gs850 head, rather than source a later model head? Maybe then the intake would not accept the cv carbs? Just a thought..

Ok well I guess I will just keep with the CV carbs and save myself all the hassle of this project. Or better yet, order a set of Mikuni flat slide RS racing carbs from Sudco for 800 bucks and really go. It was just a thought anyway. Glad I have this site as a resource otherwise I might have tried it. I just like the mechanical cabs better and they behave first thing in the spring with out needing to get loosened up before they run well.Last edited by Guest; 06-23-2012, 04:26 PM.
