Smoking
I didn't see anything when I did a search for this, but that could be because I didn't use the right combination of terms. I have an '81 GS550 and whenever it gets warm, the left side starts pouring out white smoke. I know this means it's burning oil, but I'm not really sure where to start looking for the culprit. Also, when looking into that problem, I noticed that I'm having issues with backfiring into the airbox. Does anyone have any ideas where I can start looking for the causes? Thank you.Tags: None

Is the plug oil fouled? If so, most likely the cylinder and rings are worn. Oil smoke on start up is most often valve stem seals, but smoke after warm up is rings.
Has the bike sat for a bunch of years? Is so you may want to dump some Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders and wait a couple of days for it to work. Sometimes the rings stick in the pistons after extended storage and the sauce may help unstick them. Failing that, it's time to pull the top end off of the engine and inspect everything.
Good luckEd

Do you know of a good place to get a set of rings if that is the direction I have to go? I've checked out Z1 and CycleReCycle and can't find anything.
