I have a 1981 gs550t tht i turned into a cafe racer. It has pods and cut exhaust with baffels in the pipe. The carbs have been dipped and cleaned all my contections to my coils are great(coil relay mod). The boots are new with new o rings. I am just out of ideas here.
Heres the issue my plugs are black always if i lean them out I get a crazy hanging idle no idea why. Also during acceleration at a stop sign its not to strong until 4000 rpm than she rips. The bike pulls great from 4000 to the top. My question is any ideas on how to get my pugs to not be black while not haveing an hanging idle?

Thanks everyone

How did it run before you modified it?

Have you re-jetted the carbs? :-k

Adding pods and/or opening up the exhaust will require new jets.

Hi babes.....

Your not the only one so dont worry...
The amount ov posts about pods and bad running is almost infinate!
I had this problem too.
the bike went like stink at high revs but chugged up at low revs...
I found that actually the bike was running a bit too lean at low revs as the pods wernt creating any suction within the carbs (which the normal air filter does with all its rubber tubing and lid).
This slight vacume sucks fuel through the.idle jets quite efficiently... Pods.don't do this.
So my particular fix was to cut four short strips ov old inner tube, this i rolled.over the pods until they are sheathed, leaving just the end sticking out .....(this is all sounding a bit too erotic!! Ahem!!!...)......then start rolling it back bit by bit, starting with just.10%.air intake and if you need more air, roll it back a wee bit more...

This.gives.you easy sight ov what your doing. Then once you do this you could even work out by how much you could adjust your air jet or idle mixture.

What sort ov carbs are on your bike, CV or Slides?
I have experience with CV's but alot.ov other bods here will advise.on Slides...

Hope that helps some.

forgot to add that i did rejet
I have 125 main jet stock pilots, needles are 3 down from the top and the air jets are 170s.

I know this sounds like an odd combo I think it is very odd myself but it works. when I do 117 mains it to lean and when I did 150 air jets it bogged. Oddlly enough it ran a bit better without the pods. (SO CONFUSING!!)

but what I cant figure out is why are my plugs still black but when I lean it out with the air screws it get a hanging idle?

by the way I have them turned out 4 full turns

Helli again.
Try the needle clip 2.from the top (middle.slot)

still think its about the lack ov suck that happens with pods.

If there was a lack of suck why would my plugs be black? I am not sure I understand how the carbs work? So your saying with the air box on i get more suck from the carbs?

Yes. Thats how i understand it... Though, its pressure... Not a vacume...

And yes, the sheath post is above... Not below.

try it, it might just work.
