    Which are the correct stock jets?

    1979 GS 550E. According to the carb spec sheet on Basscliffs site, the correct jets should be a 92.5 for the main, and 40 for the pilot. Can anyone verify that this is dead on please? I ordered what I was told were the only jets available from the dealer, they arrived today, and were #80. As far as I can tell from the chart, they were only used on the 550L. Thanks in advance.

    HI.My 550 service factory has #80 main jet
    Pilot Jet No. 1 #15
    Pilot Jet No. 2 #50

      The figures you quote for jets are for the CV carbs. Rover has given you the standard sizes for the VM carbs. Your bike should have VMs being a '79 but make sure you know which carbs you are buying for - somebody could have messed with something.

        I'm good and covfused now. Rover, my bike only has 1 pilot jet that I know of, a #50. I don't know what the #15 would be. Hampshiredog, my bike is a '79, cv carbs wern't introduced in the US until 1980. I don't know why the specsheet on Basscliffs site shows a 92.5 for the US from 1977-1979 on the 550E. Thanks for the replys, it's appriciated!

          Have another look at the spec sheet from Cliff's little old site:



          Rover gave you the right numbers and so does Cliff. If your bike is running with your jets in it then you have CVs fitted.
          79 GS1000S
          79 GS1000S (another one)
          80 GSX750
          80 GS550
          80 CB650 cafe racer
          75 PC50 - the one with OHV and pedals...

              Just looked at a couple of parts fiches and found the best for numbers at Alpha Sports (don't order from them as they are too expensive):

              ..JET, MAIN 4 C,EC,N,EN; A80

              JET, PILOT NO.1 4 C,EC,N,EN; A15

              JET, PILOT NO.2 4 C,EC,N,EN; #50





              And Basscliff's site shows the numbers you mentioned for the 1980 550ET and 1981 EX not your 79 550EN which uses the same carbs as the 77-79 550L (it shows the correct numbers for you on that line).

                Thanks, that clears up a lot for me. So the dealer got me the #80 main jets, the bike already had the #50 pilot jets in it. Thankfully I was already aware that at some point the bike had been modified with straight pipes, pods and jets, guess they didn't mess with the pilot jet, though. I'm just trying to get it back to stock. I have to do some reading to figure out what the A15 pilot jet is... Thanks again, this thing will run again one way or another.

                  On the 550s there are 2 pilot jets in line. If you unscrew the one you can see there is one 'buried' behind it. If the carbs have been laid up for a while take care not to bugger up the head when undoing. Use a perfectly fitting flathead screwdriver and preferably soak with penetrating oil before attempting to undo it.

                    While that is true for the four-cylinder bikes, it is not completely true, as the 1977 GS400 had CV-type carbs.
