    Fuel Problems 82 Gs850Gl

I have a 1982 GS850GL that i am trying to get running well and dependalbe enough to be my daily driver, anyways i have run into a snag. the engine is running great up until about i would say 6-7k rpm, i dont have a tach so i dont know, if it helps any it still has the original air box but it does have an vance hines exhaust on it, i cannot figure out what is causing the bike to loose power whenever i excede this rpm range and why it will die if i try to give it full throttle. help would be much appreciated

What kind of maintenance have you performed? Are the carb jets stock?

      Hi,

Have you modified the intake or exhaust?

Your bike needs a proper carb cleaning, valve adjustment, airbox and air intake sealing, no inline fuel filter, etc. It's all here: New Members, CLICK HERE!!

Follow the maintenance lists. They have pretty much everything you should check, clean, fix, replace, etc, for these 30 year old bikes. Do it right the first time.

      Thank you for your indulgence,

      BassCliff

Your carb jetting is not designed to work with that modified exhaust.

            Hi,

Somehow I missed that you had mentioned the V&H exhaust. Sorry.

Yes, if the bike has a V&H exhaust then it has been modified from stock. This will require jetting changes in the carbs. The "performance" exhaust is more free flowing hence the air/fuel mixture at bigger throttle openings sounds like it is lean. What size main jets are installed in the carbs? Stock is 115.

Don't forget to check everything on the maintenance lists in the new members link.

            Thank you for your indulgence,

Time to go through the carbs! See Nessism's link for carb rebuild tutorial. Not only will you eliminate one of the top Newbie Mistakes [Again see Nessism's link], you will know what jets you have and can then ask more informative questions regarding where it should be (jetting).

Do the carb clean/rebuild FIRST then make adjustments!

Edit: Stock main jets are 115 for your bike.

Hey i finally got my bike running better, found out that the fuelcock was bad and that the jets are the wrong size,I can't make it really turn the rpm and power till I receive my new jets, also found out my bike was abused pretty badly by the previous owner but that's another story. So thanks for the suggestions and info guys, I have had alot of real nightmares on this bike,"no seriously" I have been having real vivid dreams about this bike but now I'm getting the bike back to its power and glory
