    83 GS450L
Elevation 400-500 feet. 482 right here in Cincinnati,OH
    Cheap pods, stock exhaust.

    HELP PLEASE!

Carb jetting Is down right getting me frustrated. I think if I removed the airbox and went to larger mains it would at least take some of the possible air leak areas out of the situation. However if I get the wrong jets or cheap jets it may make it a heck of a ot worse.

I'll look into the factory manual. Lord knows with my limited ability I need all the help I can get. The Alpha sports site is somewhat helpful. It shows that #8 is a "hose" i assume this is the vacum hose to the fuel petcock? I received this bike with the tank off. I have the bung off the bottom of the petcock run to this vacum breather hose inlet/outlet. The bung facing to the rear is run to the fuel inlet in the middle of the carbs. Is this correct? If I put the petcock in on or reserve (with the bike not running the tank will not seal. This is giving me fits because I would love to be able to pull the tank off to work on some of this without having to drain the tank each time.

As for the diagram it is giving me a part number:
    Part# 09491-23011
    Desc JET MAINUSD Price 10.50

But it is not giving me a standard main jet size. I am not sure what one up or two up is from this. The mufflers will stay stock.
Can anyone tell me if I should go up one size or two and if so what size jet would that be?

I'd solve my petcock problem before worrying about jets. The petcock fitting on back of petcock is the vac line port. In on or res fuel should not leak down fuel line with engine off (or down vac line either). Might as well fix it now, cuz it sounds like you will be needing to remove gas tank-probably more often than you want.

How about fixing airleaks or getting decent pods ( or going back to stock airbox) ?

I was told earlier that the bung facing down off the back was the vacum line. and the one that points toward the rear (at the prime position) was the fuel outlet. Is this not correct?

How do I "fix" the petcock???? Any ideas without draining and dumping fuel anywhere? I really don't know. Not being a smartass.

        Thanks,

Part #1 on this diagram will fix your petcock (by putting in a new one) Then it will last another 30 years.

Thank you! So part 5 in te diagram is the fuel line coming off otward the back of the bike? and then the vac line comes off the back toward the engine correct?

BTW, your best solution to your perceived carb problems are 1) a thorough and proper carb cleaning with new o-rings and stock jets, 2)new carb boot o-rings, 3) stock airbox with clean filter. Check with Robert Barr to see what orings are required on the '83 http://www.cycleorings.com/450.html

Following the above guidelines will give you the best running engine with the least effort in the long run. Putting on cheap pods and attempting to rejet will likely be a long, frustrating experience.

One outlet on your pet cock should be bigger around than the other the biggest one is for the fuel line and your vacum line goes to the smaller one. terrylee

Alright Terry and others. have figured her out and have her running fairly well. The petcock refuse to shut off however so I think a replacement is in order. My floats are sealing well and there is no fuel smell to the oil (luckly).
I added a cheapy inline fuel petcock so that I can make sure there is no flooding for the time being. No to search ebay for a vacum petcock that wll work that isn't 80.00 dollars.

                    Thanks,
