    @#$%ing 1980 petcock

Put a brand Z1 petcock on my 850 and a month later, it is leaking and filing carb bowls. Shoulda just bought an adapter plate and put in non-vacuum manual petcock.

You sure it's leaking down the vacuum line? Could the slot be set to Prime (horizontal)? Maybe your float needles are not sealing?

Yeah, about testing petcock before you condemn it. You did use new sealing washers, right?

With mine if it is ever on prime, it may take a little tweaking to get it in vacuum mode. You have to have the fuel line off after it is turned horizontal. If it leaks when you pull the line, turn the slot a little bit until it stops. They do work, they are just a pain in the drain.

my buddys 750 the p.o yanked the filter out of the petcock for some reason and a couple of his bowls would leak off and on, we thought it was the petcock, pulled and and cleaned it then put an inline filter on it just incase. it still was doing it, then we pulled the carbs and found that there was so paint chips in the tank that was keeping the bowl needles from sealing, so make sure you check those needles before you go through and blame the petcock lol

As you mentioned, there is the Pingel (I got mine at Z1).

Just rebuilt the carbs when I got the new petcock, the floats are working, just getting fuel flow through the petcock when the bike is parked. Slot not on prime it is horizontal, and I have jiggled and played with it. Not blaming Z1, just blaming a **** poor design from suzuki. Got an adapter plate and pingle on the way.

Just pulled tank, petcock pours fuel out like water from a fountain. I do not know what suzuki was thinking.

Play with the slot thing. Maybe you have rust holding it open?

                      ,
I just re read what you had written, If the little slot is horizontal that means it is on prime or reserve, vertical is on, depending on where it really is positioned , you may or may not want to continue reading

Well you said that the little slot was horizontal and when you pulled the tank it pours water like a water fountain, as I see it you have a couple problems,
1- either you new petcock gave up ship or there is some thing [ like possibly rust or dirt] holding the internal seal open.
2- your floats are not set right or your needles have the same foreign matter holding them open because if everything was right with the carbs they should have stopped the fuel at the needle and seats
3- unless of coarse the fountain of fuel is flowing out the vacuum line in which case it is definitely the petcock
So even adding the PRINGLE[ it's Pingle] petcock you may want to recheck your float heights and needles because you thought it flooded before forget to shut it off once and see what happens

Played with the slot like it was a virgin on prom night to no effect. No rust in the tank.

Tore the petcock apart today, found fine gray powder on the diaphram and around the output nozzle, cleaned it up, working perfectly now. Any ideas what the hell the powder was?

If your sure the gray powder ain't from your tank, inform Z1 so they can sample check them- maybe there was manufacturing problem.

Bead blasting glass? Any derusting done inside the tank which could have left behind a residue.

Glad you got'er fixed at any rate.
