    1981 GS1100E To damn loud!

    Hi

I picked up my 1981 GS1100E last night.
Before leaving we started it up to make sure it worked but holy S**T....
at 2000rpm and I could barely hear him talk. The pipes are 4in1 black. Can not say what make it is cause there are no markings.

I'm sure once the tuneup is done it will sound better, but still loud, but untill then I need a simple way for reducing the noise so I can work on it with out ****ing every one around me.

    Any suggestions?

Congrats on the "new " bike. Do you have any pics of the pipe?

At the end of the pipe does it appear to have a baffle?

More important, does there appear to be any fasteners at the tail end of the silencer? They could be brads, allen screws, phillips, etc.
If you can give us a few shots it would help.
My Kerker on my current ride, for example, has 3 allen head screws which I can remove, pull the baffle out, and repack with the silencing material of my choice.

            You mean #8?

Looks like an old Yoshi or maybe Bazzani.

Might need a repack using some Stainless Steel mesh (avaliable on ebay). Get the coarse stuff.

You may get lucky and just need to repack the glass. Better yet, use stainless steel wool http://www.amazon.com/Two-Brothers-R...l+wool+exhaust
and it will last a lot longer than fiberglass.

Other than that, it could be a missing baffle or a damaged (rotted) baffle in the megaphone.

              BTW, nice looking bike.

Thanks for the input. I get the feeling I will have lots of questions about this bike.

Take a look at the pic.

Yes it's a nice ride! Can't wait to ride her!

Looks like a Yoshi header to me.
Re-pack the muffler and be happy.

Got her started tonight and the fibreglass wrap helped allot! I can hear myself talk. THANKS GUYS!

Should I add some high temp sealer around the inner pipe baffle edge with pipe? It is not a tight fit since the guy that fixed it banged it up somewhat.

I'd leave the joint alone or you may never get the pipe apart in the future. A little leakage is par for the course on a header like that.
