Runs then it dies and then won't start.

I have an 82 GS 550 L its my first bike i got it from a friend he told me he had the carbs re built and that it needed a new ignitor box. I replaced it with the Dyna s and solder the connection to the hot wire on the tale light and now i get spark on all 4 cylinders. i cleaned the carburetors and re assembled them to how they were before i disassembled them, and i get gas to the bottom of the boles when i re-installed them on the bike and i crank it a few times or prime it it never seams to flood to what i'm aware of. the problem is i can only get it started with the choke all the way on and after a few moments i can let the choke back in but only about 90% with the choke all the way in it dies, also it starts to die if i give it any throttle at all. when i do shut it off it will not start again for a day or so. sometimes more sometimes less, but never right after i get it going. so i really don't know any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Welcome to the fourm. You can stop looking for the "right sight" to fix your bike. You've found it.

Intake O-rings between the head and the intake rubbers NEED to be replaced. A GOOD carb clean needs to be done to ensure that the carbs are actually clean. Does the bike have its' air box and filter? Is the original exhaust in place?

Cliff will be along shortly to give you the full welcome but until he shows up, lets clear up a few issues, first.

Explain exactly how you cleaned the carbs...Sounds like the pilot jets are still clogged up.

i used carb and choke spray replaced all rubbers and gaskets, also used a guitar string in the little holes and a lot of elbow grease. when i took the carbs apart they didn't have any varnish or gunk in fact they looked to be new. i replaced the rubbers and gaskets anyways. thanks for the help and suggestions keep them coming

If your intake orings are leaking and they probably are then tuning will not help. Replace orings and boots while you are soaking the carbs then bench sync and vacuum sync

hey, i think u have the same problem i just did.
with the engine running with choke, adjust the idle screw so the revs go higher. than try to close the choke completely. see what happens.

also, set your petcock to prime instead of run. see if that works

The choke and idle mix screws are related since they both adjust the gas/air mix.. One they should be adjusted after the bike is hot enough to begin vaporization of the fuel.. Two if there is vacuum leak or the carbs are not synced then you get variable results.. Another consideration is your exhausts condition and its ability to maintain back pressure..
