    Advice on my GS650G

Hi, I'm new to the forum and new to my bike. My hog has been a 68 Hodaka ACE100 for awhile now. I wanted a big boy bike so I traded a Kawi KE100 for the GS. Anyway, I rode it home from where I got it to my friends a few miles away.
It ran, but would not go past 4000 rpms in all gears, just kinda slugged out. It was missing the air filter and cover and just had some egg crate shoved in the filter hole.
I plan on rebuilding the carbs, so question is, should I keep looking for a stock air box (which has been very unsuccessful) or buy quality pods and re-jet while the carbs are apart? I rather get back to stock, but I don't want to wait and wait.

Also I'm pretty much a beginner on the GS, but I noticed when I down shifted and left off the clutch the drive train would slow way down and chirp the rear tire. Novice down shifting or could something be going on?

    Thanks!!

    Welcome !!

*I* prefer stock. Some prefer pods...the only difference is the jetting of the carbs, which sometimes can be problematic to get dialed in correctly.

Check out this, it may help as you work through things.

1A) (NEW) Trying to diagnose running problems on a bike with an unknown maintenance history. Common maintenance items like clean carbs, properly adjusted valves, no air leaks in the intake system (airbox, carb boots), a clean gas tank (no rust), and a properly functioning petcock are 100% mandatory for the bike to run properly.

Stock is way less work since you don't have to mess around with rejetting. Please check the carb rebuild tutorial and Newbie Mistakes thread linked in my signature for lots of good info that will help you rehab your bike.

Thanks should have mentioned, I've already read the newbie stuff. I plan on following all the advice, like o rings and all that. I guess I'll be patient and keep and eye out for an air box. What about the downshifting?

Oh and I'm on a bunch of forums, but why do the threads appear backwards? I.e. page 3 will be post 1 and page 1 will be the last post??

          Chirps

As far as the tire protesting on downshifts, if you 'blip' the thottle a tad before you let the clutch out in the lower gear, it will be smoother. Could be
low throttle-off RPM that has the tire trying to match up to the engine speed in the lower gear, causing the 'chirp'. As far as not getting higher engine speed, the mess that the air box you describe might have something to do with it. If you find a filter, you're gonna have to get the 'cage' that the cone-shaped filter wraps around, no part number for that, rare to find them, unless you order the stock OEM replacement filter (which includes the cage) from your friendly Suzuki dealer, preferably on-line from a variety of parts dealers. The squarish cover that goes over the box the filter sits in, is another matter. Unobtanium.
The clips that hold that cover on are available.

The thread display order is a user selectable option. I can't remember how to adjust it, but the access is in your user options within your profile.

The chirping is probably just letting out the clutch too fast- mismatch speed- I've noticed this if I go from third to second to first quickly.Likely due to drive system. If you still got air filter box (and are just missing cover and element cage), I'd hunt for stock replacements- this model runs very happy with stock setup. They come up on ebay regularly.

Also on the tire chirp thing, you are now on a shaft drive bike and THAT alone, will 'unwind' completely different than a chain driven bike. No real 'slack' in the system to level out the down shifts.

                GREAT bike... I think you're gonna LUV it ! ! !

Hunt out a stock air box setup, you'll be glad you did.

                  Greetings and Salutations!!

                  Hi Mr. wildzebra,

It could be that you need new tires or you are just downshifting too quickly, the engine is spinning much slower than the wheel. As was mentioned, blip the throttle and let the clutch out a little easier.

The shafties like to chirp a lot, lol.

I usually drop gears at like 3k, as I'm downshifting to a stop. If you're doing it at 5k, it's probably gonna lock.

Thanks all! I figured the down shifting was user error. Going from a 2 stroke 100cc Hodaka to a 650 shaft drive will probably need some getting used to.

@tom203 yes just the cover and cage.

Well when I get it back I guess I'll start by cleaning and replacing the rubber parts on the card and keep my fingers crossed on the air box parts. Thanks
