Carb Sync/balancing with standard Vacuum Gauge?

    thanks for the replies.. I figured I'd ask just for the heck of it.. I'll just get a ready made carb sync kit and be done with it.. It's something that will come in handy for tuning other people's bikes.

      I have the same set BassCliff outlined and I calibrated them using a MityVac vacuum bleeder. One at a time, just set each gauge to the same reading on the mityvac.

        That can work, too.

        Doesn't really matter if the MityVac gauge is accurate or not, you are using it as the same reference for all the others, which is all that really matters.

          Please explain the mityvac method.I do mine on the bike with the good old U tube,but then I have a twin.

            Just connect the MityVac to one of the gauges and pull some vacuum. Note where the first gauge sits at 10 inches indicated on the Mity Vac. Then connect each one, one at a time, to the MityVac and pull that same 10 inch reading. Set each gauge to the same reading that was indicated by the first gauge.

                get a 5 way splitter from the aquarium department,hooke them all up to 1 carb port and balance them then continue with sync,ask Steve how i know lol

                    Does anyone have experience with the Motion Pro sync tool? I'm looking to buy my first carb sync and want to get something inexpensive but not at the cost of a crappy gauge that will suck...ha! vacuum joke.

                    While we're at it, are the analog style ones less accurate than these tube style ones?

                      I have experience with all three of the Motion Pro gauges that have been offered over the years.

                      The analog gauges are no worse than any other analog gauge, and, like the others, they need to be calibrated before every use.

                      The blue liquid version is OK, but "fiddly" to use.

                      The mercury one worked well, but the lid over the mercury reservoir would flip up if you so much as looked at it cross-eyed, so was not very safe.

                      For the shear convenience and practiality of it, Get a Morgan Carbtune. The link is given in post #5, and at today's exchange rate, it's $99. The Motion Pro analog gauges are $57 from Z1.

                        I just got and used the motion pro blue liquid one and it was nice and easy to use for me. I don't have any experience with any others but it came with nice brass fittings. the bike is running great after using it. I liked that the restrictors kept the liquid from bouncing all over the place like the metal rod one at the mechanic shop i've seen used.

                          not sure if you guys in the U.S.could get them but over here in the U.K i have used a set of davida vac gauges for years, not cheap it has to be said, but 100% reliable.

                            "Not cheap". How do they compare to the 65 GBP that the Carbtune will set you back?

                              I have a set of mercury gauges and I think they are the best ones out there, always correct and never need to be calibrated. If you can find 3/4 lb of mercury. I think it took about 18 thermostats to get enough to fill it up. Friend has the little ball one from Suzuki. Works nice but you must calibrate it before every use.

                                Trust me, you don't need "3/4 lb of mercury" for those gauges.

                                I have the king-size version that does SIX carbs and even it doesn't need that much mercury.
