Very sticky petcock
What can I do to lubricate the petcock on my 84 1150? It has been getting progressively harder to switch positions, so today I decided to take it apart and lubricate things, BIG suprise after I put a drop of oil on the little plastic inner cone with the holes in it I couldn't even get it to budge at all. Cleaned that off and tried a dab of grease, same thing, cleaned that out and just put gas in there, still no go. It's like it is swedging itself together because of the cone shaped piece of plastic. Any suggestions? I'm at my wits end and I don't really want to spend Big bucks on a replacement petcock. Thanks, Doze.Tags: None

The best thing to do it replace it but it can cost a nice little nickle.
You can try a rebuild kit. Some say it works, some say it dont.
Other than that, I dont know..sigpic

I have used a Scotchbrite pad on the cone and the inner bore of the body to remove the corrosion that is causing the bind.
You don't want to remove any of the material, just the corrosion, so go lightly.

Are these ok to disassemble without having to replace gasketry? I would take mine apart to free it up but I didn't want to be forced into a rebuild kit, which seem to be a roll of the dice in terms of quality, with the only other option being a new one.

Thanks for all the input folks, I gave up on trying to lubricate it and just bought a new aftermarket one. K&L makes an exact replica that seems to be very well built. Cable guy, yes you can disassemble these without messing up the gaskets. Actually if it's just gettting tight and you want to try lubricating it, you only have to take the petcock lever side apart, just leave the diaphram side of the unit alone. Doze.

The part you lube is the actual valve correct? If not, can you do this while the tank is holding fuel?

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.
