    Midrange Issues Conflicting Info

So I'm in the process of tuning my '80 550e. It is showing signs of running rich in the midrange (unresponsive to throttle increases once it has been run for 15 minutes or so). This seems to be adjustable by the needle position. The problem is I'm not sure which way the needle needs to move. Acording to this:
    http://www.factorypro.com/tech_tunin...m_engines.html
the needle needs to go down which would make since as it would block fuel.

    However this:
    http://www.mtsac.edu/~cliff/storage/...d_Tutorial.pdf
    (about 3/4 down)
from basscliff's site says the spacer must be thinned for a lean condition.

I'm unsure which to do and any help would be appreciated.

The bike has been re-jetted for pods and 4-1 and valves have just been done.

To raise the needle, you thin out the shims on top of the needle. The spring below makes shimming the bottom have no effect.

If you are rich, you can thicken the top washers to push the needle down.

Thanks, that makes much more sense now, I didn't realize there was a spring under it.
