rusty pipes...

My 850 has lots of rust on the exhaust pipes. Anyone got a trick for maken'em pretty again?

Petroleum jelly for the heavy rust.Fine steel wool WITH a lubricant like WD40.
Steel wool will scratch the chrome without the Lube.If the chrome is shot nothing will help.Some will advise against the steel wool.Try a spot ,it works.

If the rust is pretty bad I'd sand blast the pipes and paint them.

The narrator is pretty crude, but Marvel Mystery Oil works well for removing rust. I've used it with good results.

I'd have to try it to know for sure. Kinda looks like it might just be covering it(no I'm not a Yankee in lala land). All it's doing is moistening the Oxide making it appear removed.

Kinda reminds me of using Armorall on dull paint.

Oh, I kinda like that dude..

I'd just sand the pipes and paint em..

Did you mean naval jelly? Don't think petroleum jelly would do anything to rust.

Well you can definitely sand blast it, providing it hasn't rusted from the inside out. It would be probably just be easier to find new pipes.

Get a tooth brush and some brasso and get to work, will remove all the stain shine things up and not mess with what chrome is left. The results is in direct relathionship to patience and effort, then clean it all up when satisfied with lemon pledge.....trust me it works.

It depends on how bad they are. My V&H 4-1 was bad and heavily pitted. I did what Nessism suggested. If the sandblasting blows them out, they wouldn't have lasted any time anyway. They came out nice enough with VHT Flame Proof that I used them on my newly painted bike, and have been for several years now, refreshing the paint every year or so. https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/phot...eat=directlink

I used a wire cup wheel on a 4" grinder and VHT Flameproof. That was 2 years ago, they still look pretty good. Going to clean them up and coat them again over the winter. Might not have been the recommended way to do it, but it worked and is still cheaper than a new system.

I like the paint idea....does high temp paint actually handle that high of temps

VHT Flame Proof does. I got mine at the local Autozone. It will be as good as your preparation of the exhaust surface. Existing chrome needs to be well roughed up and rust removed for the paint to stick properly, and read the curing directions.

Funny... Naval Jelly dont do much either. And to boot, it's a pain in the azz.
