    Smoking?

I've been working on my GS1100EZ project ofr some time.

I've got her up and running but have a bit of a smoking issue and not quite sure what it is.

I replaced my exhaust and put in new exhaust seals as well. The new exhaust is a Mac 4-1 unit and I originally thought that I was getting some exhaust leak out of one of the headers. When looking at the bike yesterday and running her at high rpm for a bit standing there I noticed that I think the smoke is actually coming from under the bike itself.

No shortage of oil in the case but I'm wondering if perhaps I have a bad gasket down there and it's slowly leaking/cooling the oil. When the bike sits for some time I do see a spot on the driveway (currently about the size of a teacup saucer so if there is a leak somewhere I've yet to figure it out). I suppose I could tape something to the driveway to collect whatever the substance is and see if it's oil (don't think there's much else it could be).

    So two questions...
    1. Any thoughts onwhat my issue is or how to troubleshoot it?
    2. Do you think the bike is safe to ride? While I don't mind a minor iol leak right now I certainly don't want to be in the position where I was ignoring something major and find a pool of oil coming out when I'm even 5 miles from home.

I'm still new at this so any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

I do believe I would tape something under the motor and see where what it is and where it is coming from first. Last thing you need is to blow a gasket and all that oil gets thrown on your rear tire while riding. Nasty things will happen.

How many miles have you put on since you got it on the road? and since the new exhaust has been put on?

        Rough guess, under 20 miles.

I'll admit that I'm still getting the feel for the 1100. It's a lot of bike to muscle around for me.

I would give the engine a good scrubbing, and go for a nice long ride. You need to get it hot and up to temp for a while. You might be cooking old oil off the motor. Basically just ride it and moniter where the oil is coming from.
If you have a 4-5 inch circle spot of oil after the bike sits overnight, well that will need fixed. New gaskets, or retorquing the head, checking all the covers for leaks....gotta find the source.
I would still go ride the bike a number of times getting it up to full temp on a handful or 20+ mile rides to get the bike operating and see what you find after that.

Maybe your oil pan plug leaks? Right on the pipe?

Once you clean that engine to make sure its not any old grime burning off, you might try some tough-actin' Tinactin to isolate any leaks. Spray some foot powder around the suspect areas, and start her up. The white residue gives you a blank slate to spot drips or leaks.

                Hi,

To repeat, clean the engine well and use a little foot powder spray. Run the engine and check for the wet spot.

Or, put the bike up on the center stand for the night with some paper under the engine area. Perhaps the location of the drips can also give you a clue.

The normal suspects are the base gasket (as above), head gasket, valve cover gasket (easiest to fix), and cam chain tensioner gasket (also pretty easy to fix). I suppose it could also be the clutch cover gasket, stator cover gasket, or drain plug.

If the petcock is leaking and over-filling the crankcase with gas (diluting the oil), it is possible that the oil/gasoline mixture is being forced into the airbox and leaking from there.

                Thank you for your indulgence,

                BassCliff

                  Tach seal is another culprit.
