Pressed aluminum caps removal
Hello everyone, I have a quick question. On my 1982 gs 850g the carbs still have the pressed aluminum caps that go over the pilot screw. It doesn't look like anyone ever took them out. It seems like a silly question but does that mean the screws haven't been touched since the factory? If it hasn't, then would the settings on those screw be a good base to start off with as far as tuning purpose? The bike has 27,000 miles on it. Thanks for your help !!!

The stock setting would be a fine starting place, but keep in mind that they were set to meet emissions rules with the engine brand new. They were not set to provide the best running, and your engine is not new any more.Ed
To measure is to know.

I would say check them to see how many turns it takes till they seat LIGHTLY. then when assembling, start out that many turns.
everything being the same, I think they should be the same as factory, but minor changes in exhaust , airbox, and filter may dictate a small deviation from stock...
Incidentally, I use a small drill bit , drill JUST thru the metal then screw a small wood screw in and lever out with pliers.
I've never had a problem getting them out in fact most will spin while drilling...

Mine popped out just fine. Just watch your depth when drilling.sigpicMrBill Been a GSR member on and off since April 2002
