Well, my 850L IS running better......

I guess it's an improvement from how it WAS running the other day....

    [backstory]

I pulled the carbs, and did a ground-up rebuild on them, because I was not satisfied with their performance when I got the bike. It's an 80 850L, and I got 4x carb rebuild sets of Ebay for a good price. Installed the rebuild kits, along with a Dynajet Stage III kit, using 165 main jets, and clipped the needles on #3 from the top, as per instructions. Synced the carbs by wire method, and got them running BETTER, but not perfect.

    Specs:

    1980 850L
    - Stage III Dynajet kit
    - K&N filter pods (SU-9084)
    - V&H 4-to-1 exhaust (with baffle still installed)

Upon cold start, I'd have to choke the bike all the way for the first few minutes, then choke halfway for a few more. If I gave it gas, she'd start to stumble and want to die out. I had the option of running a 180 or a 190 air jet, and chose the 190.

Now, the throttle wants to hang for a few seconds when I let go, yet I properly drilled out the slides with the included drill bit. Am I still running too lean? If I am, should I shim or re-clip my needle so that it sits higher on the slide? The problem diminishes when she warms up, but does not go away entirely. I can wrap my pods with a t-shirt and it runs alot better, so I am assuming I am allowing too much air vs. fuel? I am also getting an occasional backfire here-n-there on when I let go of the throttle.

    Hope that helps.

Where have you set your mixture screws?
And vacuum synching will work wonders, you can't really tell what to change until you do this.

It sounds like the mixture screws are too far in maybe, and you could have a bit of an air leak?

Life is too short to ride an L.
