Stock air box removal - 1983 GS750E -Quite the challenge!!

I've 1/2 way through the removal of the stock air box on my gs7850e...

Good thing I enjoy a challenge and can work whilst consuming mass quantities of beer!

    Has anyone ever done this?

I've ordered K N filters and received the delivery notice today...of course I wasn't home so have to wait till tomorrow after 2 pm...but thought I'd get started removing the stock box...

From what I've concluded the unit was installed prior to the engine being installed.

Has anyone had the same experience?

    Dave

Probably was installed before engine on assembly line, but similar setups have been removed and refitted by many persistent folks on here. General tips are loosen rear fender and anything else to gain an extra half inch to rear.
Pods and 4 into 1 are in your future? rejetting will be your next adventure, so take advantage of good advice offered by people who have done it.

Lots of cursing and swearing are in your future, probably lots of beer as well....

Bloody pain in the arse, about as bad as trying to get the carbs back in

some have gone as far as losing the bolts on the engine and moving it (tilting it) forward as well

loosen up the battery box, or remove it completely and remove rear fender if possible, I don't remember if it's actually all that much in the way though so it might not be necessary

      good luck

.Rear fender not necessary but loosing up motor mount bolts is a definite, and then not sure if you will have room.I sold a air box to a member here last spring and I believe he had to pull the motor to get it in. I personally would stick with the air box.

              You think it's fun now???

Wait until you start jetting the carbs.

By the way, the job might have gone better with fewer beers.

I'm about to do the same thing to replace some carb rubbers, but i have to wait for us freight to get them here, at christmas time i dont want to take my chances, i've had the carbs out of my 83 gsx750esd and they are a real pain to get in and out, i'm not even game to try and remove the airbox as i think the bike may end up out the front with for sale on it.. lol

I had to remove the motor mount bolts to tilt the engine forward with a prybar. Still had issues getting it out and didn't feel like scraping my frame or box up. So I vacuumed mine out and powerwashed it. all clean

                        Thanks for all the posts...

New to this site and hadn't realized anyone has replied to my post...

As I mentioned I had to swiss cheese the airbox with a drill...it took a while but I think it looks great...

Need to possibly re-jet the carbs...waiting for the warmer weather...

Hope to post some pics soon...

Hmmm...drinking beer causes a little mix-up...I'm a beer drinker too so writing about "beer drinking" while working on a bike may/may not be acceptable to some. Interesting...

Yeah, I'd keep the original airbox...my first thought is to keep my bike as original as possible...except maybe the handlebars/mirrors.

Good luck with your task and post pics.

Even on a very SLOW forum, you should expect to get an answer or two within three months. (That is how long ago you started this.)

In fact, you had eight replies within the first 24 hours.

                              No, you hadn't mentioned that.

And, ... you did this for looks or performance? Drilling holes in an airbox is not really a good way to achieve either one.

There is no "possibly" about it, you WILL need to re-jet. How much of a re-jet will depend on the quantity of "swiss cheese" that was installed.

It has been mentioned a couple of times already, but the "too many beers" might be part of the problem.

Personally, for something as critically important as motorcycle maintenance, I would prefer to be as SOBER as possible to make sure everything was RIGHT.
If it doesn't matter all that much to you, I can only hope that I will not be in the way when something happens to your bike on the road and parts start coming off.
