Petcock Re-work

    ummm
    people seem to think that exxcessive fuel in the oil is only caused by a bad petcock. well that is only one of the problems. Fuel should NOT flow into the motor with petcock on and engine off.


    The float needles and seats are worn/dirty if this happens.

    positively shutting off fuel at the petcock will of course solve the problem, but it should not happen even on PRIME if left overnite if the floats and needles are good.

    I've left many a bikes with GAS LEFT ON even for months and never had a problem with oil in the gas UNLESS the floats/ needles/seats are bad!

    I think they designed auto shut off petcocks like ours to fend off leaking carbs and give it more time till that nasty thing happens thats all.

    On my old suzuki savage I wanted rid of the original petcock because after sitting over winter, the gas evaporated from the carbs and the prime mechanism was torn out of the petcock cause it was all messed up so I always had a time starting it after it sat a while!!

    there was a very nice fix of putting on a yamaha raptor manual petcock on it!!! It fit perfecly and was only 30 buck as I remember..I wonder if anyone has tried that on our GSs???

        I've left my bikes in prime, and sure enough the carbs overflowed, the bikes were on the sidestand.
        I did it again recently on my GS1100E but this time the bike was on the centerstand, the carbs did not overflow.
        I don't know why they do that, but perhaps you should check your owners manual.
        Here's a '82 750EX owners manual that states on a caution that leaving the petcock on "Prime" may cause your carbs to overflow, this is on page 16. So.................. it doesn't specifically say that you got bad seats or anything else wrong with the bike, it just says doing that may cause them to overflow. I think the fact that when my bikes were on the sidestand the floats were not level and maybe didn't fill completely to allow the seats to close completely. Anyway, for what it's worth here's the owners manual.

          I will admit that on the side stand there will be more problems.. . i suppose more so on
          GS models too...for whatever reason(s) possibly floats not floating??
          but all things being the same..............


          If you have good needles/seats/floats... it should not happen

            Well my bike has a worn out side stand and no center stand anymore ( PO took it off god knows why) on the side stand it leans way over, Im guessing that it may play a part in it.

            I agree that the needles and seats must be worn a for it to leak the way it has done... Its flushed the tank dry! (never have I seen a bike do that before and I have left the prime on heaps of times with no problems!

            Ive been looking at getting an ultrasonic cleaner so if i get one... Then that might be a perfect excuse to Rebuild some carbs!

            Although I really want to just get this bike going as cheaply as possible so i can use it before summer is over!! buwahhh

              That worn out side stand can be removed and then beat together for a tighter fit in a vise or on a block of wood or whatever. The bolt that goes thru can be snugged up , then the lock nut on the other end secured.

              Don't try to just tighten the bolt to get it to draw down tighter. you'll strip the bolt.

                That's what I did after years of rebuilding fuel valves on my GS, and other old bikes. It is kind of expensive, you can always do it later....

New SS fasteners through out. Rebuilt carbs, new EBC clutch springs and horn installed. New paint. Motor runs strong.

                          I never found one that would work with my 1000 there. When I was having petcock problems I searched there and even though I found some petcocks, I didn't find one that would fit. Perhaps I was looking in the wrong place at Z1.

                            Unfortunately, there's some parts out there that command a high premium if you will to acquire. One of those is the GS1000C/EC/N/EN petcock, believe it's also used on the '79 GS1000S also.
                            Another high cost part is the 1st Generation Turn Signal Control Unit (TSCU) That little bugger will cost you $369.87 with a retail of $456.55.
                            A few other things that will cost you should you need them are stock pipes, gas tank, and seat.
                            There's a set of stock pipes on E-bay that don't look too bad, and a '81 GS1100E/750E tank will bolt on the '79 GS1000.

                            Here's the parts fiche for that little turn signal control unit.
