    Vinegar in the gas tank

I just wanted to report that filling the gas tank with vinegar, agitating it every few hours for the last 5 days did a terrific job of removing the rust scale in my tank. The only expense was 3 gallons of white vinegar and the time to go out and agitate the tank.

............................hi i,ve used vinigar in cleaning out rust /crap from my old tank... i made a mistake of leaving it for the day and came back to find the the gs1000e tank had pin holes of rust on the laft hand seam anyway the vinigar had eaten thru the rusty seam and leaked over the floor,,, ,,,but it does clean tanks well if you watch what your doing ... regards oldgrumpy

Luckily, I didn't run in to that but it's something to keep in mind.

What did you use to rinse it out?

I don't know what they used, but baking soda would work.

I used lots of water to rinse it out. Once I unplugged the petco and started the vinegar draining, I had the hose stuck in the fuel fill running at full blast to rinse the vinegar and chunky bits out. After I shook as much water as possible out, I dumped about a pint of wd40 in and shook that around to coat all the metal.

I was going to put gas in but I'm not ready to bolt it back on the bike yet. It's a lot easier to do empty .

I assumed since I started the thread, he would want to know how I rinsed it out.

Cool - I never knew you could even buy WD40 in anything but a spray can.

That might be a good assumption.

Did you put any gravel inside or just fill it with vinegar? Curious, as I'm probably going to go this route as it seems safer than the electrolysis method. Things have a way of going wrong around me.
