If the timing is wrong, should it idle perfect? The valves are by the book.

A new mechanic, yes :-) Or stick to something I know he he

Yes...Timing may let it idle smooth...but at the higher RPMS ( when the advance governor comes into play ) The timing may be too far advanced or retarded. I would set the RPMs at the manual setting with the engine well armed up ande fans in front of it.

Then recheck the timing on each side. You do the 1/4 side first ( big base plate ) and then the 2/3 side. ( smaller late sitting on the face of the bigger base plate).

              Cliff has it:

Possibly your mixture screws need setting. Unless you're giving your bike loads of beans you're probably riding on that circuit most of the time.

              What colour are your plugs?

I had a similar problem with my GS 1000 with CV carbs: idles fine then big gap until I reached 6000 rpm and then it went like a rocket.
I raised the needles from slot #2 ( from the top) to slot#3: big improvement but still not perfect when opening the throttle 1/4 of a turn.
Back at the needles that I raised one slot further ( in #4): the bike now runs like a dream
I know you switched the carbs from another bike BUT...if it's not exactly the same configuration in terms of inlet or exhaust it will prove nothing
As someone taught me on GSR the CV carbs must be tuned from the main jet downwards....

I have now bought a new set of carbs. Tested on a woking bike, and working fine there. If this will not fix the problem on my bike... Im all out of ideas.
