How do I make my exhaust quieter?

My 1982 GS850 came to me sporting a 4 into 1 Vance & Hines after market exhaust in place of the stock exhaust.

While I understand there are some performance benefits of this set up, the noise (to me) is a little on the loud side for my leisurely Sunday rides with the missus.

Without having to scrounge up a different exhaust, or going back to stock (if I could find a good stock set up to being with) and then having to re-jet everything, is there any way to quiet the Vance and Hines exhaust?

can you remove the innards of the tail pipe? is so wrap it with silencer packing material and replace it.

Just remember, an opinion without 3.14 is just an onion!

On the off chance that your pipe might not even have a baffle inserted, check out the selection of baffles at Dennis Kirk.

When I put packing in my Kerker it made it twice as quiet or half as loud (depending on whether you are a glass half empty or glass half full person).
It now sounds throaty but not obnoxious.
I measured it with a sound meter, btw, so my measurements are accurate.
