It in a way spring loads the clutch pack in an effort to stop the plates from rattling (noise) and keeping them straight and poss. stopping them from cracking (which I have seen) when releasing the clutch by keeping them aligned with each other.Shock absorber, cushion etc. This best of my knowledge.

does it matter what way it goes in.
I have read that some people take it out and install another disk.

Yes and in the service manual (bikecliffs website)there is an exploded view of how it is installed. If we are talking about the same spring. I don't believe that by removing it you could install another plate. But in all of the drag bikes I have worked on I have removed it because at times if the clutch got hot and the plates would expand the bike would creep while staging therefore making it hard to hold back while staging and at times causing a red light (foul) start. The one I am refering to is located inside the inner clutch hub and has a seat, spring washer, steel plate and a piano wire holding it all in place.

Good point! He just asked about where the wave washer in the clutch went lol. In the service manual on page 7-49 is a close up of how to install the washer new style and old style.Looks like just the spring seat changed from a narrow width to a wide width.

                        allright here's the thing
My motor is new. all the clutch parts are factory new parts and all clutch parts were replaced at the same time the clutch basket is a early Vance & Hines Super hub I think it was called rebuilt by APE with there billiet basket.
she slips after 5 grand I think what I might have done is put the wave washer in back word's that looks like theres less pressure on the plates hence the slippage.
                        any one agree.
