Ok...Now set the side mixture screws at around 1 3/4 to 2 out. These are good baseline settings for the pilot and mixture screws. By "fuel pilot screws" you do mean the ones on the bottom...right? Yes those should be at 3/4 to 7/8 out.

Timing will also effect gas mileage ..also so will tire pressures. Check both.

If you have a spark plug cleaner, clean the chit out of them and then see how well the milage increases. bet youll now be around 35 MPG or so.

I have the General Pneumatics spark plug cleaner...cheap and very useful.

Remember the saying..you tune VMs from the bottom up..In other words, to richen it up a little from idle to about 1/4 throttle you will open the pilot screws a little..1/8 turns and retest the performance is the general rule of thumb. Once you get it really good you can fine tune the mixture with the side mixture screws.

Thanks for the tip first time with an old bike didn't know how to tune the carbs for adjustment . I read some disassemble and assemble post and bass cliff not sure where I got the 2.5 turns out on bottom screw but that's where I had em.

Rent, or get, a 90 dehgree screw driver from a buddy for the bottom screws..you wont be going in any but you may want to come out a bit for a slightly richer situation.

You were probably reading about the BS-series carbs (also called "CV carbs") where we set the "idle mixture adjustment screw" to about 2.5 turns out, then tune from there.

Those carbs are COMPLETELY different, so please don't try using any of those tuning tips on your carbs.

Thanks chuck for the advice of screw driver I found a paper clip bent just right is a good substitute. I used that on the side of the road yesterday after I ran out of gas for the second time. I probably did get the instructions from the CV carbs I was also rebuilding a set of those at the same time I did my VM carbs. Thanks again for the quick replies .

                      20-some replies in a day.

                      I'd say that's about average.

The Petcock is operating correctly with the vacuum diaphram. There is no gas in the oil I drained it and smelt no gas. It is operating much better the fuel mileage is coming way up, now I corrected my fuel mixture screw. Picked up a spark plug cleaner yesterday going to clean my plugs and see how it goes from there.

Be sure to blow the sand out of the plug and the threads before trying to insert it..sand in the threads will rip the threads up in the jugs.
