    1980 GS1000G Carb Question

got the carbs off the bike and in the process of cleaning. I left them ganged at this point and was wondering will I mess things up if I remove the Air adj screw on each? and what actually synchronizes all four together? Is it something to do with the linkage?

Never had these off the bike and don't want to make it worse then when I started.

Had idle issue but think now it was because the foam gasket in the air box was shot.

    Thanks

You need to go to BassCliff's web site and download the latest CV carb cleaning (or rebuild) guide. Short answer, they need to be completely disassembled. Anything less is like taking a bath with your clothes on. You make go through the motions, but you will not be pleased with the result.

The locknut on the butterfly linkage is the sync screw. You will notice there is not one on the #3.
The screws on the top of the carb where they go into the head are idle mixture screws. They allow a mixture of gas and fuel to enter the engine at idle. They will have to be adjusted after you rebuild them with the new o-rings.

        Hi,

You'll find carb cleaning/rebuilding guides on my website. You will also find carb vacuum sync write-ups and other "how to" guides with lots of pictures. All the documentation on my website can be used to familiarize the new bike mechanic with all the necessary maintenance procedures. Most are in PDF format so you can download them, save them, print them, share them, etc.

If I missed sending you a "mega-welcome" kit, I apologize. Here's a shortcut: New Members, CLICK HERE!!

Everybody probably knows this, but its helpful to unscrew the choke cable mount from the top of the carb in order to provide access to the synchronization screw.

Basscliff I did get your welcome and believe me I have spent lots of time on your site. The info is almost overwhelming. I already got the O-ring kit from Mr. Barr and one by one I'm dipping all the innards of each carb and keeping them in separate containers. I love the taking a shower with your clothes on Koolaid Kid. Good stuff indeed.
Looking over the O-rings there is a bag of 4 micro rings un-named any ideas?

Thanks for all the friendly help. I used to be a motor head back in the early 70's and if anyone has ever heard of the Plymouth Trouble Shooting Contest my buddy and I were State Champs in 1974. I just never got into fixing bikes. So thanks again.

Slow but sure getting there, what do you folks recommend for lubing the O-rings on assembly? Cant wait to get her up and running as the weather is getting nice.

Those will be your mixture screw oring's it goes: spring, washer, oring.... make sure the old one is out first, I lube with silicone spray, as its also useful when refitting the carbs to the rubbers

Ok, did my shopping and everything is back together. I bought a Motion Pro Syncpro Carb tuner and my question at this point, is it OK to leave the 5mm vacuum tubes in the engine and just leave the rubber caps on the ends? The #2 & #3 ports are quite hidden with the carbs back in place. I did purchase the Motion Pro Vacuum Adapter, Brass w/Cap 5mm x P0.80mm and could leave them installed as well.

                    Just wondering.

I'm not quite sure what you mean but I have the vacuum adapters fitted on all 4 and just slip the rubber pipe on to them when I need to sync, then just replace the rubber cap and that's that

I have the sync adaptors permanently left on my bike as well, Yamaha used to make them a part of the intake with rubber caps just like this. Here is what I have on mine just to avoid confusion should you have something different.

You guys got it and that's exactly what I was talking about leaving the adaptors on the bike for future sync's. I was just wondering if the engine heat would do something to the rubber caps.

                          thanks again.

Depending on how tightly your caps fit and how your bike runs, you might get away with leaving the adapters in place.

I tried that on my 850, but it coughed a couple of times during warmup and spit the rubber caps of. I removed the adapters and went back to the stock plugs.

Finally back up and running. I put the carbs back on after a total cleaning and re-sealed the air box. Started er up and synced the carbs adjusted the idle and off for a test ride. She didn’t even hiccup. Looking forward to adding up some miles this summer.

A BIG thanks for all the valuable help here. This is a great site and I’m looking forward to checking in and reading all the good posts.
