FYI-My Carbs have a number precast into them.
No need to number them yourself when rebuilding. Just noticed it is in the casting. Here is a pic of my number 4

#1. Here is a picture of one of my carbs. Evidently I have a VERY RARE NINE-CYLINDER GS.
Even Allen Millyard would be jealous of this one.
#2. That is your #1 carb. They are numbered from left to right, as you are sitting on the bike. #1 is under your clutch hand, #4 is under your throttle hand.
I think that is more of an indicator of which mold was used to cast the body, rather than position indicator.
It is really rather easy to identify them, based on just a few key items.
#1 (the one you have pictured) has no throttle linkage out the left side, it is covered by a cap.
#2 has the vacuum port for the petcock.
#3 has the linkage to hold the throttle cable.
#4 has no throttle linkage out the right side, it is covered by a cap.

Yea...great idea..all mine are numbered correctly EXCEPT the one in the carb dip. I had #3 in there at the time I took the photo. Unfortunately I have 2 #4's. LOL!

As I mentioned, do NOT rely on that number to position your carb on the rack. My #9 carb should be enough proof of that.
I also gave you the quick, easy way to identify them, so it should not be any problem at all.
