sure is acting like the jets are clogged.

this bike has 4 rebuilt carbs, 4 new fuel screws, new fuel tees, new fuel hose, a new petcock, and a por-15 tank coating. New points/condenser.

It was running fantastically, put several hundred miles on it. Now it will start and idle, but it has NO power. If I open the throttle it cuts out and dies. Why the sudden change? If the carbs are clogged, where on earth did the debris come from? I plan on pulling the carbs tonight, but if you lads can think of anything else that would cause this, please let me know.

    Thanks

check the fuel tap filter inside the tank. the new coating may have partially blocked it.
does it run ok on prime?

Good question, I'll drain the tank and pull the petcock before I bother with the carbs.

      Thanks

        Hi,

Are there any leaks in the air intake system? New intake boots and intake boot O-rings? Sealed airbox? I have to keep an eye on my airbox because sometimes it will slip to the rear and the airbox boots will start leaking into the carbs.

        Thank you for your indulgence,

Pull the plugs , see if plug number 2 is fouled , possible bad pet cock. after sitting fuel leaks into carb and cylinder fouling plug , or just pull vacuum line see if it is soaked with fuel

How long did ya let the POR15 cure? Yes it says 24 hrs, but if theres a thick spot laying on the bootm seams it will NOT be fully cured. That's why I always adviocated 2 to 3 days in the direct sun to cure it real thoroughly.

Hope the gas hasn't soften some up and sucked it into the fuel system and carbs.

The carbs looked pretty darn clean. They're fully dissembled and sitting in lacquer thinner overnight.

The petcock was also very clean, and seems to be operating as designed.

During disassembly, I noticed that a) the return throttle cable had come off, and b) the air hose between the airbox and the valve covers had come off.

I don't think the return cable had anything to do with my symptoms. I also doubt that air hose had anything to do with it, but it's more likely than the throttle cable.

As a side note, there's a line coming out of the bottom of the airbox that i've never been able to find a home for. Does it have one?

                Thanks

It could be a vacuum leak. The o-rings for the intake boots are new, but I might have a cracked boot. I'll check, thanks.

Neither the return cable nor the breather hose would cause this issue.
The hose coming out of the airbox is a drain hose, it should route downwards.

Well, I soaked the carbs and pieces overnight in lacquer thinner, then blew out all the passages real well with B-12 carb cleaner, and reassembled. For ****s and giggles I sprayed B-12 in the airbox, too. Red/brown crap came out the drain hose. I went through almost an entire 20oz can of B-12 before it started coming out clear.

Made sure the breather hose and return cables are secure this time, fired it up, and it is VERY responsive. Plus my choke doesn't stick anymore.

I'm headed out right now to get an in-line fuel filter and a clamp-on air filter.

                      Thanks guys
