GS1000 petcock washers.

    GS1000 petcock washers.

    I bought a petcock rebuild kit to repair the one from my '78 GS1000.
    The cost of buying a new petcock lead me to this even though i have read plenty of negative reviews on the kits.
    Of course i did not pay attention to the direction of the rubber washer on the lever.
    According to the link in BassCliffs site the open end of the washer should be facing inward.[towards the bike].

    She is a no-go for me. I have applied oil, silicone and even warmed up the washer in hot water but the lever will not sit in the body.
    Am i not reading the instructions correctly or is it a matter of more muscle.
    The BIG hammer has not been required for at least a month.

    Its just an oring isn't it? I just used a nitrile oring that I had that just happened to fit in one of mine. Was a tad tight to get it in..twisted and pushed and it suddenly just slipped in.

    What does the rebuild kit one look like..ive never used a kit.

    I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

      It's a specially designed O-ring if you will, make for that very purpose. It has like a split on one side that catches when you try to install it. I had the same problem with mine, so I flipped it around and in it went where it is today. Perhaps if you look closely you can see the split in this photo.

        Regular round orings in mine..never a leak. Just sayin.

            it is a U section seal. i refitted mine with "open" end facing outwards, never had an issue.
            1978 GS1085.

            Just remember, an opinion without 3.14 is just an onion!

              Specifically designed O-ring on mine, no leaky, peace of mind.
              Also, specifically designed gasket/seals under the petcock bolts.
              Item 6 on this fiche, and that special O-ring, still available is $4.39, item 2.
