How clean is the air filter? Clogged it can be choking the helll out of the engine.

    1978 GS 1000 E, 1979 GS 1000 S, 1973 Yamaha TX 750, 1977 Kawasaki KZ 650B1, 1975 Honda GL1000 Goldwing, 1983 CB 650SC Nighthawk, 1972 Honda CB 350K4, 74 Honda CB550

NEVER SNEAK UP ON A SLEEPING DOG..NOT EVEN YOUR OWN.

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

The filter is quite clean. I actually cleaned it out (it's a foam filter, kinda looks like some I've seen that are made by Uni) when I was trying to diagnose this problem, so it should be fine. It wasn't hardly dirty before I cleaned it, either.

Another fun bit of info: I rode to indy and back tonight typically around 70 mph, which is 5.5k to 6k revs, and got maybe 31 mpg. Around town I get a fair bit better than that, as I'm normally a fairly sedate rider. I would think I should be able to eke out 40 mpg or maybe a tad more the way I normally ride. Can't wait for those jets to come in...

I'm running the equivalent of 132.5 main jets, Pipes and pods, 41 MPG flogging it and 44 MPG driving easier, so you should be able to do better than that.

I was thinking that 115 on the mains would be about perfect for you as well. I'm having similar problems but I have dual oval element RC 2222 K&N filters. changing the needles back to stock 5f21 in the 4th slot down with a 122.5 main runs pretty strong but I think I can do better, & it bogs at higher vehicle speeds trying to pull from 4000 rpm to 5500 at any throttle position past the pilot circuit. need to try 120 or 125 mains and possibly 17.5 pilot. I think on yours the stock needle position or possibly shimmed a half position higher on the needle lower on the clip than stock would be best. or just put a K&N filter in your air box and try 120 main jets

Update: 115s are much much better, but still a little rich. 112.5s should be perfect whenever I get a chance to pull the carbs again. The difference on the highway in both power and mileage is incredible; I typically ride my 27 hp dual sport, so I don't always remember what a good-running GS should feel like.
