I just rebuilt the carbs, bench synced them and leak checked. All looked good. I then installed the airbox after shooting a little fuel in each carb as a prime. I hit the starter and cranked the engine over, it fired for a second then nothing. Thought maybe it was not getting fuel to the carbs so I loosened the drains and yep there is fuel there. I can get it to flood then fire for a short bit but that is it. Any ideas?Tags: None

Maybe try blowing air into the overflow vents. Sort of helps prime the carb internal passages. Needless to say, the airbox and filter should be installed unless you rejetted for pods.Ed

This is the 81 gs1000 ? put in your signature ( User CP, top left) to aid us memory challenged folks.
When you cleaned your carbs, did you clean out the little hole in bottom of fuel bowl that feeds the "choke" system- fuel has to travel thru hole, up tube to reach carb throat when "choke" is activated? poke it ,blow gumout thru it, etc. These critters need an extra shot of fuel for quick cold start.1981 gs650L

There are holes at the very top of that pick up, tube as well Tom. Right where it inserts into the carb body. They need to be cleaned and poked out as well.
Then put it on PRIme, full choke ( do NOT touch the grip ) and fire it off. If itm starts then swing the petcock down to the ON position.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

Well I got into the carbs again. Part of my problem was not using the right O-rings. I had just gone thru the set I had and found some the right size, aparently being as these were for "household repair" they are not fuel proof. A couple seem to be crumbling. I have ordered a complete set from cycle o-rings. Never saw anything like it.
Now I thought I had replaced the intake o rings as a PO had put some around the carb base where it goes into the intake. I now know that the PO knew of a vacuum problem and tried to redneck it. As for now, I am going to go thru this bike from intake to exhaust. With the help of basscliff's awesome information page.
