How long does it take for an engine to warm up?

I have a 1980 GS1000 G with APE pods, Vance & Hines 4 into 1, and a Dynojet kit. It takes about 15 miles before it will rev to redline. How long should it take to warm up? It runs fine up to about 3500 RPM until warm. Carbs were just off, cleaned, new o-rings, floats, and manifolds installed.

With the stock air box and our Florida weather, my friend's 1100 with stock air box and jets, warms up within a minute or two. Come winter, I wouldn't expect his to take longer than 5 minutes to be warm enough to go.

Yea, my 850 takes a little choke until I get a few miles down the road. If I turn the choke off too soon it will stumble slightly but will rev freely.

Could be that your jetting is still set up on the lean side.

My 1000G will take full throttle within a minute , choke is only on long enough to fire it up and gets shut off immediately within 15 -20 seconds of start up, might be alittle rich though

750: I start with full choke and immediately move to about half choke for a minute or so. It's pretty well fully warmed up in a 2-3 minutes.

1100: Same process but it takes 3-4 minutes to warm up.

[850 Combat]

On all of my 1000Gs I can push the choke all the way in at idle in a minute at most. I don't know how soon it will take full throttle. I don't care to run an engine very hard before it has reached operating temperature. I suspect that it would run hard right away. 850s are more cold blooded stock.

Yours sounds lean.

Idle mix is a very important factor. Folks here report that the factory mix is very lean to help meet emissions rules of the time. Setting the mix a little more rich helps the engine warm up quickly.

Steve adjusted the mix on my 1000G when he balanced the carbs. It comes off choke, ready to go in under 30 seconds. (Barring extreme cold or empty carbs.) My 850 has not had the same treatment, and won't act like it's "warm" until it's been working hard for several minutes. This is completely the opposite of the 850 in Steve's signature, which warms up just like my 1000.

If you can turn your idle mix screws, you might try making them all 1/4 turn more rich until you get a more reasonable warm-up period. I'd do it to my 850, but those carbs will need to be disassembled and maybe cut on to get the screws free.

Thanks, I will make the mixture a little richer and see what happens. It starts fine with no choke and also idles fine right away. The valves were done by me within the last 500 miles or so but I suppose they could be out of spec again. I hope not.

500 miles shouldn't be enough to close the valve clearance. If they're tight, it's because there was a mistake or some other problem.

Starting without choke from cold is a bit odd. Maybe that's a feature of your non-stock setup. If it was a stock intake, I'd think it was already too rich at idle.

I think I found the problem. After finally getting back to dialing in my carbs, my bike would not start. The battery was shot. After replacing it the bike warms up just fine. I'm guessing maybe the spark just wasn't hot enough. Thanks for all the input.
