device on the underside of fuel tank?

Hey folks, been searching high and low for this one, Got a GS550M 82 which we've cleaned the carbs in and switched plugs, oil etc.

What I wonder about is a small device bolted to the underside of the fuel tank, right hand side. Two cables connect to it, and a long rubber hose runs from it. What is it and what does it do?

My handbook doesn't mention or even picture it.

Sounds like the fuel level sender. Does the bike have a fuel gauge? I would say check one of the on line company's microfisches for the bike or your manual if you have one. Try Bikebandit.

Oh, and just for kicks and grins, please check the Newbie mistakes thread and carb rebuild tutorial linked in my signature. Lots of new GS owners "rebuild" their carbs, only to realize later that they were a little hasty. Now is the time to work slow (smart) to speed up.

Ah, that must be the one, did a quick search on it.

But what does its rubber hose do? Some sort of ventilation?

Actually I do Nessism, but I might have drowned in the info, got the GS550 700-page-pdf.
But the rest is true, supernew to biking, but my Father has made a living of bikes most of our lives, unfortunately british ones.

There is a receptacle on the sender plate that will catch gas in case the screws holding the plate leak.
This is then diverted by the hose.

Thanx Jeeprusty! We have re-installed everything but the fuel and vacuum hose, so I wanted to be sure this one's hose didn't serve some critical function.
