    1982 GS1100GL bogging

I just had the carbs rebuilt and synced but it still boggs down after about 3k rpm and if you go wide open. Bike is all stock with stock jets. dealer said its running lean.

I ordered a jet kit and will install when it arrives but I am looking for confirmation that this should resolve the issue. I am surprised that I have to rejet a stock bike. Is there a difference in the fuel from 1982 to now that is causing the problem?

    Thanks, Jay

No, but dealer is likely less interested now in 30 year old bike. Stock airbox, stock exhaust should run fine with original jetting, but carbs have to be cleaned correctly or bike ain't happy. Dealer says "it's running lean"- how thoughtful- sounds like you need to avoid him asap. Is there an air filter element in there?

I'd check your valve clearances first before going and changing jets...

I know the dealer pretty good. Many purchase with this one dealer and never had a problem before. They rebuilt the carbs and cleaned them out. The bike only has 2500 miles on it so it shouldn't need a valve adjustment. Thats why I was thinking fuel but I guess that's not a factor. I will pull the crabs off and look at them and make sure they are clean.

I'd still check them, and as Tom said about the air filter, look for air leaks and pull the filter out of the box to make sure all's as it should be, if its stock seems a bit hasty to think about rejetting

It has a foam air filter and is properly oiled. I am going to pull the carbs off today and make sure that something didnt get in there during the install process.

Ok I pulled the bowls off the bottom and in each carb there was this black rubber plug laying in the bowl. Anyone know if that is supposed to be there somewhere?

I ran into the same thing when learning about cv carbs... That plug belongs in the carb body. There is one in each carb and it is held in place by a small protrusion cast into the bowl...Line up the bowl and you will see where it belongs... Should be a simple fix.

Just in case you didn't know, a carb sync is more for idle speed and low-throttle situations. Once the carbs are over about 1/4 open, any small differences are rather negligible.

You're kidding, right? You have not heard about "ethanol" being added to the fuel supply for the last several years? Or all the damage that it causes?

Actually, at 2500 miles, it should be just about due for its SECOND valve adjustment.

Look at the stickers that were on these bikes when they were new, you will see that "First service is due at 600 miles, then 3000 miles and every 3000 miles after that."

Travelling only 2500 miles in 31 years is not good for the bike. There will be a LOT of maintenance that will be dictated by time, rather than mileage, sounds like you need to get busy with it.

Yes, there are two tubes that stick down the middle of the carb. One of them holds the main jet, the other will have the pilot fuel jet. The main jet will be rather obvious, with its small hole and a screwdriver slot, the rubber plug goes into the hole that has the pilot jet in it. It should fit rather snug, but don't fret if it does not stay in place on its own. There is a nub on the inside of the float bowl that presses it into place and holds it there.

Except for the red-colored highlights, it's straight out of the factory service manual.
