It is not about being right, but about getting the right information.
Thanks Derrick. And you're correct...it's about tracing and recording the manufacture of these machines, so it's about getting the info right.
In looking around, I think it's from a GS, not a GSX. The GSX tanks appear to have knee cutouts as a common feature; this tank does not. There is a very subtle flattening in the knee area, but no discernable line at the front of what would be a knee cutout.
I'm pretty sure its from a T-model, say an 82 GS750T.
The thumbnail isnt exactly this tank, but if a seller on Ebay is correct, it is from an 82 750T

The dents on the red and black tank were probably put there intentionally -- maybe to clear a different triple or clip-ons. There's also some non-oem welding at the top front of the tunnel.Last edited by bwringer; 10-26-2013, 10:24 PM.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

Yes Derrick, I see now the single tab at the back of that Ebay tank I posted. Mine has a broad, flat tab with 2 mounting holes. The think that caught my eye about the T tank was the notch at the bottom, rear corners, for a side panel to slip into.
bwringer, I noticed that too. The weld extends about 2 inches under the front of the tunnel then up the inside edge. Not sure why this was done. I dont see any other evidence of modification or damage repair in the area. I'm wondering if they didnt do it when they dented the front corners, as a relief cut, but it still doesnt make sense.
That's a nice tank GS/GRPaul, but its not remotely the same tank. Mine doesnt have the raised section on top, my fuel cap is not centered like that one, mine doesnt have the pronounced knee cut-outs, and the mounting looks all wrong. Man I like the crap out of that tank you found though!
