I have a 1980 GS 750E model that I'm turning into a cafe and I really am not a fan of the tank shape. What are my options as far as trying to fit other models tanks on this bike? I like the longer look of the 78 and even the tear drop shape of the 550.

I think the early GS1000 tank interchanges, but finding those is not easy or cheap.Ed

As far as I know, the '78 and '79 tanks are the only direct swaps, with the single-bolt, vertical rear mount. I know that most (if not all) of the 1000/1100's from 80+ had the double-bolt, flat rear mount.

You can also get the tank you want and then swap the brackets like we did on my bike. Just be sure that the tanks are empty and dry inside before you start cutting or welding on them.
I'm considering a much more advanced plan where I use the bottom and mounts from one tank with the top of another tank, and probably some ugly patchwork underneath to make it all hold together. But I would not recommend this path for the beginning metal worker as it is an order of magnitude more difficult than just making a 1984 tank fit the 1980 frame.Comment
