Cant the base metal be filled with something like JB weld or another high temp filler, sanded, and then painted???MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

NEVER SNEAK UP ON A SLEEPING DOG..NOT EVEN YOUR OWN.
I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

I hear you.....maybe dechrome ( or other plating ) using the muratic acid thing then sand any imperfections and replate?? See this thread. Ive never personally done this, but I posted a method I had found...post 8.
I am facing a similar quandry on an old Kerker can..see that thread for the pics. Its rough!!!
