Can this cause that? VM carb settings

My bike was running fine this fall but I thought I would send the carbs out for a total overhaul, cleaning etc... I was able to ride it once before the ice and snow hit so now I am trying to diagnose this issue in the garage. I wont be able to ride it again until the nasty melts away so Im spending some time reading and tinkering. I find plenty of reading about what Im supposed to set things too.. but not much on what happens if it is wrong.

    Symptoms:
It idles perfectly and starts like a dream. Once I put it in gear and try to take off I have to get it up to about 1/2 throttle or it will die. Once Im rolling... everything seems to smooth out and run well. (hmm maybe I cant work a clutch haha)

    First step:
I double checked the throttle cable as a first step to make sure is was engaging. I didnt ride long as it was raining and 45 degrees so the thought that I didnt let it warm up enough has crossed my mind. I also double checked all my seals and mounts to ensure everything was tight.

    AH HA!
    - Here is my "AH HA moment".... My air screws are backed about 4 turns from seated. Needless to say I plan to go back through things and check all the settings.

    The Question:
But there in is my question... assuming everything else is correct (just for discussion) Could this massive amount of extra air cause the symptoms Im describing? A drinking buddy says I dont have enough fuel... My response is that too much air is the same thing as not enough fuel lol. AS mentioned I do plan to go back through things and check these settings.. this was just something I found immediately and was curious about.

Too much air is the same as too little fuel… Once you are rolling and the throttle is open the screws aren't doing much anyway. And those carbs look sweet!

Thanks tkent2. Im wicked pleased with how they turned out. Every stripped, worn, marred, or gunky bit was replaced with new or deep cleaned. Plus they were pretty'fied haha. It took a long time to get them to run with my set up, but it was well worth the effort. This issue is just some minor tweaking.

The bike ran fine all summer... the settings are good. I dont need help with settings. Im already aware that with my set up the air screw should be no more than 1.5 turns out.

Im just curious if the air screw is backed all the way out would cause this symptom. Its a hypothetical diagnosis discussion. I know several other things that can cause this symptom.. Im just not sure what happens when the air screw is all the way out.

Unless Im miss reading tkent2's response.. the answer is.... yes.

Then the hypothetical answer would be "yeah, probably".

Start with the PILOT out 7/8 turn and the side air screws at 2 on most VM applications for the default settings. Tune them from that point.
