Now Im gonna have to get the 28s I got from Jeff Saunders down and lay them along side Gregs 29s and compare...LOL. never paid that close attention to the arrangements myself..but nice to see and learn that stuff.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)
1978 GS 1000 E, 1979 GS 1000 S, 1973 Yamaha TX 750, 1977 Kawasaki KZ 650B1, 1975 Honda GL1000 Goldwing, 1983 CB 650SC Nighthawk, 1972 Honda CB 350K4, 74 Honda CB550
NEVER SNEAK UP ON A SLEEPING DOG..NOT EVEN YOUR OWN.
I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

Some more info from the Z1Enterprises site.
It does mention the early smoothbores having drain plugs.
It also shows that early Z-1 stock 28mm carbs had the 17mm nut on the bowl.

G'day all,
Thanks for your musings there, gents; very interesting to get your views on identifying the carbs.
Chuck, they are definitely not 26 or 28mm carbs... as they measure 33mm exactly for the ID on the engine side. And they are *much* bigger carbies than the VM28's currently on my GS1000.
As the intake side of the carbies seems to be drawing a bit of interest, here's another couple of photos.
First is the rear of carbie #1...

Its simple. Open the slides wide open and see if there smooth bores and dont have the curved area for the slides. that will end the smoothbore debate

they are, without a doubt smoothbores. the small square on the r/h side of the casting gives that away. the bores look very oval, and the walls on the head side look quite thin.
are they a set of 29's bored out to 33's?
they could be a set "played" with by Wiredgeorge. he bores out 26/28's out to 29mm using oval bores. i am currently having a set of 28's bored to 29mm1978 GS1085.
Just remember, an opinion without 3.14 is just an onion!

i've just been through this with a local with a GS1000ST - like these they measured up at 33 on the engine side but were oval bores.
Suzuki used these nominal 30's on the ST's and some of the rarer 1100's.
JohnKat should be able to identify, he's got a couple of sets of them.

G'day blokes,
As usual lots of great info. coming up here... have learned more about identifying Mikuni carbs in the last 2 days than in than in the last 10 years. Which may say more about my original level of knowledge than anything.
Agemax, I don't think they've been bored out at all; no 'boring' evidence to be seen.
It seems that Mikuni did make 33mm smoothbores; if you go to the Z1 site you can see the stuff that they stock for the "33mm smoothbores".
Well folks, that's been a great help. Nice to be reminded of the Z1 site for parts for these carbs, too... gunna need a few bits and pieces.
Now then, another question. The slender brass 'siphon' that feeds the choke circuit from the bowl on #1 carb has been busted off in the past. Is that something that you guys have ever managed to fix? Or as it's just the one choke circuit on one carb that's affected, would you bother?
Bat on,
Mike.

Yes, the local GS1000ST carbs - VM30's with 33 bore on the engine side.....had a broken choke circuit standpipe too. I used a small easyout to remove it - they're only pressed in.
I had a broken set of 29 smoothbores here and the standpipes were similar so I extracted one and gently tapped it into place in the VM30 body...
Oh, and while I think of it, the ST owner put me onto your website when we were talking cam timing. Very useful, thanks.
