Historical note:
When K&N filters first came out, they claimed the filter material was surgical gauze. True story.

What I can confirm is that although the diameter isn't the same, the distance from center hole to center hole is the same as the VM carbs for the 850. I'm pretty sure it would fit. Do you have calipers? I can walk you through how to measure the distance between the two so that it's accurate.

K, so grab your calipers (once you're home), and pull off the filters.
So, you need to measure the distance from one red mark to the second red mark. Then measure the distance between the two blue marks. Make sure that you're measuring the distance between carb 1 and 2 or between 3 and 4. The distance between 2 and 3 isn't necessarily the same as the other two.
If you do it correctly then you'll use the part of the calipers circled in red to measure the red marks, and the blue for the blue:
Simply add up the two numbers you got and divide by two. That will be the distance between the carbs.
They need to be near 2.938" or 75mm.
Let us know how it goes.

Ive got a few friends with them and they love them. Will get a pair for my gsx once summer is over and I can rip them out and measure the carb throat diameter!

*you could also just measure the centre to centre mark on the top of the carb caps - this can be done on the bike. No math required if that isnt your forte.

Set of K&N RC-0984
Rob,
I've got a set of K&N RC-0984 filters for 82 GS1100EZ (my bike). Brand new, ordered them, then decided against playing the jetting game so I never installed. They have the chrome caps and 54mm flange. You can have them for 50 bucks plus whatever shipping cost would be. Let me know if you're interested.

Too late!
Thanks, but I already ordered the APEs - should be here any day. I'm wondering if I'll be able to ride it to the shop for jetting.
I heard our bike was 55mm.1982 GS1100E V&H "SS" exhaust, APE pods, 1150 oil cooler, 140 speedo, 99.3 rear wheel HP, black engine, '83 red

Yes, you will be able to ride it to the shop. Just don't go blasting down the road, as the main jets will need to be increased in size. Stay on the needle (partial throttle) and you will be fine.
