I'm an engineer...so math is my forte...

Both of my bikes are in storage at my friends shop...so I will hopefully take some measurements this weekend. Just purchased the GS1100, planning to tear into it (valve adjustment, carb cleaning, check stator/reg, etc)

      Symptoms of rich/lean?

Are there any symptoms of too rich/lean besides less-than-max power?

      Backfiring, higher oil temp, etc.?

2016 XL883L sigpic Two-tone blue and white. Almost 42 hp! Status: destroyed, now owned by the insurance company. The hole in my memory starts an hour before the accident and ends 24 hours after.

Popping on decel/higher temps when lean
        black smoke/backfiring when rich.
Or it just won't run if it is way off.

Run a plug check is one way to see if you're running a good tune (other than just riding it).

          Tru dat

That makes sense. It's been popping on decel since I bought it (3 months & 500 miles ago), and I just figured that was normal, or because the V&H needs repacking. (I've been off two wheels for 24 years.)

A week ago I learned it's supposed to have a lid on the air box, which it doesn't, so it's lean.

Thanks, I'm trying to learn (I practically sleep with the manual).
