I am sure someone may say different, but I'd say don't worry about it. If your that desperate a center stand will be cheap on fleabay.

Is the #1 carb the most gunged up?

Usually it is, if the petcock is leaking a tiny bit, the fuel flows slowly into the left carb, since it is the lowest one, as it turns to goo it is replaced by more fuel, which makes more goo.

The end resut is the left one gets all gunged up.

The real problem is letting the bike sit too long.

when fired up on ether it ran on 2/3/4 but not on 1 but i realise that probably wouldnt be the carbs? and it has been standing on its journey from your great country to mine i have just removed carbs for cleaning but dont want to have the same problem down the line

most modern sports bikes only have sidestands so it cant be bad! saying that, with the older bikes like our GS's, then as stated, the fuel system has to be in top working condition to avoid any problems

Yes, it probably is the carbs, specifically the #1 carb as mentioned. The pilot circuit and the choke sit the lowest in the carburetor and have the smallest holes, they are the first to clog up and they will make it not run on that cylinder. When you clean the carbs, pay attention to the pilot circuit and the choke feed passage in the float bowl itself, also the brass choke feed tube coming down from the carb body.

Down the line you won't have trouble if you ride it a lot. Sitting idle is what screws them up. If you do have to let it sit for months, drain the fuel from the float bowl first.

Check the petcock, they usually are bad after 30 years.

If the petcock is leaking even a tiny bit draining the float bowls will do no good, they will refill, and reclog the jets. Especially the left one.

Removing the carbs on a '78 750 is really easy. Do it yourself, nothing to it.

I bet you can buy a cheap ultrasonic cleaner a lot cheaper than having your carbs done by someone else.
