    GS700ES bogs/terrible gas mileage

    Hey all, got some questions starting to pile up now that it's been warm and I have actually managed to get out and ride around in some different parts of town. I got this 85 GS700ES from a guy a few months ago as a first bike, it's been switched to pods and has a Supertrapp slip-on in place of the original muffler. These questions might actually be fairly simple to answer, but I'm still green, so I'm here to learn.

    So, the first problem I've noticed is that instead of the ~40 mpg I should be getting, I'm getting more in the 20-25 region, which I believe is probably related to the other problem I'm having. I've managed to figure out that you have to be really gentle with the application of throttle as is on my bike. In first gear, I have to accelerate like I've got a broken right wrist to keep it from bogging. When I'm on the road, I've gotta shift at a minimum of 5k to keep it from bogging on acceleration through the next gear. If I shift below that, the RPM's drop and the bike struggles through the 2-3k range, and then goes like a bat out of hell from about 3500 to 5000 where I shift. What I can probably correctly assume is that it's running obnoxiously rich, but how do I fix it?

    On what I believe to be a side note, I'm also having problems with my bike not idling smoothly, so I was hoping somebody could offer me guidance in that, as well.

    Your milage should be more like 50. I bet you didn't jet it for the pipe and pods, did you?

      No, the pods and pipes were already on and I, keep in mind that this is the first vehicle I've purchased from someone, did that thing you're not supposed to do with PO's. I believed what he said about the carbs being freshly rebuilt and jetted.

        Those are all fueling issues. Time to learn how to clean your carbs. Grab the guide off BassCliff's site, take one apart, and report the jet sizes back on this thread.

          The Supertrapp shoud be fine, which brand of pods are you using? Some of the cheap ones are just a screen, no filter at all, and they don't flow much air either. Makes things harder to tune.

            After wet sanding the rust off the caps, I figured out that they're K&N pods.

                Get a stage 3 jet kit and sync the carbs

                    Well, here with a status update now that I've finally had time to get some work done. So far, I've taken three of the four carbs apart and dipped them. After taking three apart, I feel safe in saying that whoever put the muffler and pods on my 700 did not rejet it. All three Pilot screws are #37.5 and all three main jets are so old that the size has worn off the top. All the Pilot air jets are the same size, too, 76.0. I've also discovered that Carb #3 has two screws missing on the engine side of it's cap, and a piece of the diaphragm 'rim' cut off.

                        In another 'wonderful' plot twist, I've just discovered another problem. Whoever the jacka$$ was that 'rebuilt' these carbs last, he reassembled #4 without the float needle.

                          No one here would call me a carb "expert" but I'm still willing to risk my reputation and say that may cause an issue.

                            Yeah, that also explains why it's running the way it is, because 3 carbs are running a little lean, and one's flooding.
