    V & h 4-1

    I am interested in a Vance & Hines Chrome 4-1 for my '82 GS1100EZ. Part No V12001.
Now this may sound kinda weird, but, I intend to put it in my travelling bags when I fly back; so I am hoping it comes in 2 seperate components ( header and megaphone ) . Can someone please let me know roughly the dimensions of each of the 2 components.( L" x B" x H" )
This will greatly help me decide on how best to pack them in my travelling bags.
Any info on the above will be much appreciated. Thanks.

I'm running this set-up on my bike and will let you know as soon as I get home.

My first thought, however, would be to box it up and check it. I'm not so sure you could fit it in the overhead compartment. You might get away with holding it in your lap, but that would depend on the airline and general mood of the flight attendant that day.

I'm picturing you trying to get past security though

Security is not a problem, I have carried all kinds of auto parts, racks of carburetors, even a big cast iron exhaust manifold from an inline six. There is no law against auto parts.

Holding it in your lap is a no no on any airline.

It comes in a box you could check as luggage. Not that heavy. The header pipe is rather bulky.

Yes I was told the packing by the manufacturers measures 40" x 24" x 15". But I was hoping it could be repacked into my existing travelling suitcases. That's why I am looking for the dimensions of the header and megaphone components. Could you shed any light on them?

The rear piece is 25 inches long, exhaust is 4" round; with the bend might fit in a 6" x 6" x 25" box. Not sure of the model #, but mine is the V&H "Street Megaphone" model, and it's mounted on my 1982 GS1100e (EZ).

The header section might fit in a 14" x 20" x 17" box. Good luck!

Oh! BTW I'm intending to get the same model. Are you using a Dyno-jet kit with it or you followed the reccommended jetting instructions that come with the exhaust? I'm currently using a K&N air filter in the stock airbox.

I bought the bike ('82 1100e) 5 months ago with stock air box and the V&H "Street Megaphone" that I was told "needed" repacking, though I have no intention of doing that. She pulled beautifully all the way to redline, no missing or stuttering at all, though I suspect she may be a tad lean, as there is considerable popping on deacceleration.

I recently installed "APE" air filters (K&N knock-offs at half the price). Until the snow clears and I can get to the tuner's, I was able to make the bike run as before by taping over about 90% of the air filters (see attached thumbnail).

The Dyno-jet stage 3 kit is recommended, but since I'd rather take a power drill to the head of my sister-in-law than to my beloved Suzi, (I've never gotten into carb internals and don't intend to start now), I'm going to let an expert tuner with access to a dynamometer do the re-jetting.

Keep everyone updated on your bike with as many pics as possible, please.

                    Battery access

PS - one of the main reasons I chucked the stock air box was to access the battery without dismantling most of the bike. But I certainly look forward to the performance the tuner can squeeze out of my bike once he removes all the electrical tape from my air filters and properly jets it.

I've read that many times an exhaust upgrade does not require much (or any) changing of the jets if the stock air box is used. I think in your case the Dyno-jet stage 1 kit is called for.

As I'm living overseas, will only do the upgrade at the end of next month. Once the parts arrive will try to post some pics as well as how the bike performs with the necessary tuning.
In the meanwhile I 'll wait patiently.
