Fuel Line Size
Hey guys. If someone can help me out, I'm wondering what size fuel line should be on my 1980 GS550L. I bought fuel line from a local shop a while ago (they didn't ask what size, just said "here you go"), but it seems too small to fit on my petcock. I also got a inline fuel valve, which is 1/4". Should I be using 1/2" line?
Thanks!Tags: None

7mm is the proper size. Not automotive type, the stretchy thin walled type.Ed

7mm is 9/32 inches....I looked on Z1 enterprises site, they have:
3/16" Internal Diameter, 5/16" Outside Diameter
1/4" Internal Diameter, 7/16" Outside Diameter
5/16" Internal Diameter, 1/2" Outside Diameter
The 5/16" would be the closest to 7mm, I suppose?

You can use 5/16", if you wish, but you will HAVE to use a clamp on the end.
If you get the proper 7mm hose from any of the online vendors (your local dealer probably does not stock it and will have to order it), you can slip it on and forget it.
Why do you have an inline valve? A properly-working petcock does not need any additional help. The difference in size of the fitting (1/4" vs 7mm) will make fitting hoses that much more difficult.

The original hose from Suzuki fits perfectly, stays on with no clamps, it's flexible enough. The generic crap from bike shops sucks. You can also get the correct 7mm metric size from an independant BMW or Volvo shop, or other European car. They have a black cloth covered rubber hose that's very good.
Don't get the high pressure stuff for FI cars, it's too thick and stiff.
An inline valve is a bad idea, if the hose cuts through, splits or breaks somehow above the valve you can't shut off the firebomb. If the petcock isn't working replace it.

I am ordering a new K&L petcock (Or should I go with OEM? I haven't been able to decide).
I got the inline valve as a safety/backup/antitheft thing. Like a hidden killswitch.

I recently bought some of this stuff but it's not as nice as the OEM line from Suzuki. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-Fuel-G...3a94fd&vxp=mtr
When you order the OEM stuff they give you enough for several bikes. It's not cheap, but worth the cost in my opinion since I haven't found anything better yet at any price.Ed

That is the correct part and you get almost 2 feet of it for that price (HOSE,7X10.2X200mm). I am still trying to figure out how that is enough for several bikes?
I will just continue to use 5/16" fuel line (I buy it in 25 foot rolls) and screw clamps thank you.
Edit: I will take a picture of that part, new in the bag, with a ruler and you will CLEARLY see that it is less than 2 feet.
(Should I use a fisherman's ruler?)Last edited by Guest; 04-20-2014, 10:36 AM.

I did not bother to take any pictures, but I just opened up the second bag (the first one has already been cut into) and measured the hose.
THERE ARE 80 (EIGHTY) INCHES OF HOSE INCLUDED IN THE BAG.
That's right, 6 FEET, 8 INCHES of hose.
Or, if you prefer metric, that would be 2 METERS.

Thanks for the update Steve. I remember the hose lasted for several different bikes, including some friends bikes. Suzuki is very generous with the hose.Ed
