    interchangeable gas tanks

Hey my fellow gs riders. I just want to know what gas tanks will fit my 1980 gs 1000.
Im looking at a 1980 gs 550 gas tank on ebay right now but hesitant cause im not exactly sure. Looks can be deceiving. Please let me know.
Also if possible, can somebody tell me what is the difference between a G model and GT model?

That 550 tank isn't even close. The 1980 - 1981 GS 750 E or 1100E tank fit perfectly, if painted well and if you weren't a GS expert you would never know it wasn't original.

I have three earlier 1000E tanks to sell, two '78s and a '79, but the petcock goes right where the top of the CV carbs are, so you would have to move the hole.

I'll answer these in reverse order, if you don't mind.

      The "G" says it's a shaft-driven Suzuki GS.
The "T" at the end says it's a 1980 model.
If this is your bike, the full model name is "GS1000GT".
You could say "1980 GS1000GT", but it would be redundant, as the "1980" and the "T" are saying the same thing.
Although "GS1000GT" is proper, most people outside the GS community won't know what you are talking about.
If you say "1980 GS1000G", they will know.

I don't know how much different the '80 550 gas tank is than the '79 550E, but I happen to be working on a '79 550E right now, and can try the tank on my son's '80 1000G, if you wish.

I guess it would be foolish of me to ask why you want to cut your riding range in half.

Can the tank be bent back into shape? Leaks can be fixed, even if the guy who did it couldn't do it.

Dude, that's an 850 tank. Not even close to fitting a 1000.

If it's a 1000G, they are the same frame, so why wouldn't it fit?

The tanks are the same part number, except for the paint/trim detail.

                      1000G fuel tank: 44100-45150-08E

                      850G fuel tank: 44100-45130-08E

The 1000G has two gold pinstripes, the 850G tank has one gold, one red stripe.
I just happen to have one of each (on its proper bike) in the shed right now.

Since your 1000 is a shafty, I think the only other tank that will fit will be another '80/'81 1000G tank or a '79-'81 850G tank. Don't even think of trying a GL tank, there will be a bit of work involved in fitting it.

Wow seriously I was just about to hit the buy it now button on ebay for an 82 gs 850 gl tank.
Now thats what u call speedy. But I see that most of the.tanks on gl's have a double mounting set thingamajiggy that fits under.the.seat where my nattery cover plate would be. This.tank Im looking ay has.the 1 single hole for mounting it right where the.seat overlaps the tank just like my old(before disfigured) tank does.

I rode my 82 g around for a year before I was told it had a 80 tank on it.

Long story short the 110g tank will go right on there with no modes. If you changed crabs you will have peacock issues.

                              Cheers
