    Loose choke assembly

    1981 GS650GL, stock.

    The choke plunger is loose. When I pull up all the way on the plunger it won't stay at maximum choke - it's slips back down about half way. I may have missed something simple but for the life of me I can't figure out how to tighten it up so it stays put. Enlighten me!

    BTW, it's the knob below the gauges, not the thumb lever.

    I like tough questions! have you tried turning the black plastic ring (where cable enters housing) clockwise to tighten its grip on cable?

      Ya, as Tom said. There's a knurled ring under the rubber cap. If you tighten it (clockwise) it will add friction to the choke shaft. Many are too warn to work anymore though.

        Okay, now I feel stupid. I didn't even think of looking there. I was staring blankly at the carbs trying to determine how to tighten the choke cable. Thanks!

          There isn't a mechanism for twist lock s far as I know. On a 1000G/850G there definitely isn't, although people on this list have stated that there is. I use a clothespin on mine. The gland nut underneath the rubber cap in theory will tighten around the cable shaft to increase the friction. In practice, that worked for me only once ever. The highly technical application of a clothespin actually does work. A new cable will work too, but not for all that long.
